Bugatti Centodieci Quirks and Features Review.
Bugatti Centodieci was designed in six months thanks entirely to a new design method that does not require building a clay model and after the no-compromise racing machine called Divo and the ultimate expression of exclusivity known as the La Voiture Noire, Bugatti revealed yet another special vehicle the Centodieci.
Crafted to catch the imagination of the most enthusiastic Bugatti connoisseur, the Centodieci comes to match the uncompromised performance of the Divo, with style reminiscent of the well-known Bugatti from the nineties – the EB110.
Not only did Bugatti imagine the car to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the company, but it also walked a path that honors a supercar that was at the pinnacle of car design in the nineties. These are cool facts and features you simply have to know about the Bugatti Centodieci.
The Bugatti Centodieci is one of the fastest and the quickest on this list. Only the magical Regera can compete with it. At least according to the performance numbers released by manufacturers. In reality, Bugatti cars tent do be even quicker than what you can see on the specs sheet. It is not unheard of that the Chiron with proper tires accelerates to 60 mph in just over 2 seconds. I don’t see a reason why the Centodieci can’t do the same, or even better, considering it has less weight and more power. This leads me to the following fantastic fact about the new Centodieci – its monstrous engine.
BUGATTI CENTODIECI ENGINE – By reprogramming the turbochargers and revamping the ECU, Bugatti engineers managed to source a bit more power from the 8.0-liter, quad-turbo, W-16 engine. In Centodieci, this monster develops 1,577 horsepower.
That is precisely 100 horsepower more compared to what you get in the Chiron, Chiron Sport, Divo, or La Voiture Noire.
However, torque remained at the same level – 1,180 pound-feet. Bugatti engineers reported that they decided to keep the torque numbers as they were because of the limitations posed by the transmission. Nevertheless, these numbers make the Centodieci the most powerful Bugatti ever produced. Compared to the engine in any other new-gen Bugatti, the one in the Centodieci can even rev higher, to 7,000 rpm. That is 300 rpm more compared to what the engine in the Chiron can do.
BUGATTI EB110 DESIGN INFLUENCE ON THE BUGATTI CENTODIECI – The little round cutaways behind the doors on the EB110 and the Centodieci have a name. Apparently, they are called chamfers, and these round holes are the most distinctive style elements on the EB110 and Centodieci. However, the link between the two cars is far more profound than that. See, Bugatti was so adamant on capturing the essence of the EB110 with the Centodieci that its designers worked tirelessly to produce the classic triangle silhouette.
This required Bugatti to raise the rear end of the Centodieci, which is 60 millimeters higher in the back compared with the Chiron due to the EB110 design influence.
And every other piece of the car features evident EB110 inspiration. Rear lights, although full LEDs, are shaped to reminisce of the EB110’s rear end. It is an accomplished design that comfortably captures and updates design features of the original. Not only that, but the front end of the Centodieci carries distinct style elements of the EB110:
- a rather small horseshoe grille with the EB plaque above it
- narrow front lights
- two louvers by the horseshoe grille
- black A-pillars for a visor-like glasshouse appearance
Clearly, Bugatti managed to capture and almost literally translate the design elements of the EB110 onto the Chiron architecture. It was a challenging task that would not be possible a decade ago.
Thanks To Major Breakthroughs In Virtual Design Bugatti Did Not Use A Clay Model To Design Centodieci
“We’re reaching a level of virtual development that’s at least on par with the tools we used before. The engineering underneath is already done, so we can use virtual data to immediately see how things are moving, or where the limit is between feasibility and design development. This is the biggest progress in car design,” Achim Anscheidt, the company’s lead designer, told Digital Trends a few days after the reveal.
This, in essence, means that Bugatti altogether forgoes the use of a clay model during design development.
Instead, designers relied on VR glasses that allowed them far more freedom designing the car compared to using a clay model.
The design of the Centodieci started only six months ago, by the way. Sure, the idea about EB110 spiritual successor was there for a decade at least, but the design development was not feasible before. As Anscheidt said to Engadget, “he can put VR glasses on and see the vehicle in a way that he couldn’t with clay. He can turn it slowly, swap out lenses for different views, and essentially get 80 percent of the design work done there.”
This removes a few workers from the process of development, effectively makes the whole design process cheaper, and far, far quicker. Back in 2018, Microsoft reported that its Hololens technology (basically, VR glasses), can be a breakthrough for the automotive business. The company even said that Volkswagen uses it. I am reasonably sure that Achim Anscheidt and his team wore Microsoft Hololens glasses while designing this fantastic piece of automotive perfection.
BUGATTI CENTODIECI PRICE – The cheapest, so to say, car in the Bugatti range is the Chiron, which starts at $3 million. The second cheapest is the Chiron Sport at $3.26 million. Centodieci is currently the most expensive Bugatti at $8.9 million. For the sake of the argument, the Divo starts at $5.8 million, while the one-off La Voiture Noire was the most expensive car in the world – it was priced at more than $18 million.
Obviously, what I am presenting to you here is a list of cars exclusively tailored for wealthy individuals and car collectors. The Centodieci, although produced in ten times greater numbers than the La Voiture Noire, is already sold out. I am only wondering if Cristiano Ronaldo managed to get his hands on one. He is in love with everything Bugatti and not exactly thrilled that La Voiture Noire missed his garage filled with awesome Volkswagen-built stuff.
THE CENTODIECI IS LIGHTER COMPARED TO THE CHIRON AND THE CHIRON SPORT – While Bugatti managed to save only 40 pounds compared to the Chiron, and four pounds compared to Chiron Sport, the Centodieci did get some fantastic weight-saving features, such as the:
- lightweight windshield wipers
- lightweight carbon-fiber stabilizers
- filigree designed mirror housings
This, along with improvements in aerodynamics (it produces more than 200 pounds of downforce), gives the Centodieci track capabilities similar to that of the Divo. Sure, I don’t believe it can do the same lap times as the Divo, but it will be quicker compared to the Chiron and Chiron Sport for sure.
BUGATTI CENTODIECI PERFORMANCE – While this already sounds impressive, I have to give you some perspective.
